Recognizing that Vancouver’s point tower typology can be antisocial, and that the zone below Pacific and between the Burrard and Granville Street bridges is lacking in activity, my first intention with this project was to explore alternative housing typologies which might foster a greater sense of community and help activate the neighbourhood. The courtyard building, long used in Europe, Asia and the Middle East, is rarely implenemented in Vancouver. A large part of why it is rarely used is the fact that Vancouver recieves relatively little sun exposure ofver the year. Maximizing the amount of natural light to the courtyard became a defining force behind the design of the project and ultimately produced the organization and form for the four buildings.
